dog food

Today, there are plenty of dog food brands available, which are advertised as being highly nutritious and beneficial for your dog’s health. However, unfortunately that is not always the case. A great number of dog food brands are highly processed and contain a number of harmful chemicals. Nitrosamine, for instance, is one of the most commonly used preservatives in pet food that can deteriorate your dog’s health, and even cause gastric cancer.

A Healthier Diet

Just like humans, dogs need a balanced diet in order to stay healthy and live a long life. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the majority of dogs in the UK are fed dry food, which believe it or not, actually isn't the healthiest option. The preparation of kibble involves the process of carbohydrate purification, which is in reality harmful for your dog, as it can cause colitis, high blood-sugar and skin problems. However, as a worst case scenario, there is growing evidence to suggest a link between gastric cancer and poor diet.

Gastric cancer in dogs is an often lethal diagnosis that can occur in any breed. According to the National Canine Cancer foundation, dogs between the age of 8-10 are most prone to fall victim to this disease, due to high a consumption of nitrosamines, i.e. nitrite pickling salt.

Owners who would like to take on a healthier approach towards their pet’s diet are encouraged to opt for foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates and additives. Also, a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and even home-cooked meals can be greatly beneficial for your dog’s health.

Store-Bought or Homemade?

If you have time to prepare healthy and nutritious home-cooked meals for your pet, make sure to do that. However, if you are like the majority of UK pet owners and don’t have much time to spend in the kitchen, know that there is a plethora of good-quality pet foods out there that you can choose from.

When purchasing store-bought dog food, be sure to examine the very first six ingredients, which can help you determine the quality of the product. Look for proteins, vitamins, and fibre, and try to steer clear of soy-based foods with a lot of additives.

In order to avoid health complications and the appearance of cancerous cells in your dog, make sure to feed your pet good-quality food that does not contain high levels of carbohydrates and harmful preservatives. Your pet’s health matters, so make sure to get it on a healthier diet.
