From Hollywood hounds to movie star mutts, the year’s biggest film and TV hits have made their way into the hearts - and homes - of Brits, in the form of their favourite dog names...

As part of National Pet Month, MoneySuperMarket reveals this year’s blockbuster-inspired dog names, taken from over 9,000 pet insurance quotes on the site during the early part of 2017.

The leading price comparison website has seen the name Mia shoot up in popularity since this time last year. Emma Stone’s lead role in the (almost) Oscar winning La La Land led to a 43% increase in Mias being registered in January this year, just as the film was hitting the big screen. Despite not yet being released, Thor: Ragnarok, the latest instalment in the Marvel series, has caused a 94% uplift in Thor pups being registered for insurance quotes.

However, it’s not all about the big screen, with the lead character in cult Netflix series Narcos causing a whopping 388% surge in canine Pablos being registered, while The Crown drove a 122% increase in Winstons named after Churchill.

The nation’s favourite TV and film-inspired dog names (year-on-year rise based on January 2016 and 2017):

1.     Pablo, Narcos                                              (388% increase)

2.     Arlo, The Good Dinosaur                     (221% increase)

3.     Winston, The Crown                              (122% increase)

4.     Thor, Thor: Ragnarok                             (94% increase)

5.     Mia, La La Land                                           (43% increase)

Rose Howarth, head of pet insurance at MoneySuperMarket, said, “It’s great to see people having fun with naming their pets, but it’s vital that the cost of looking after them is taken seriously. Unexpected vet bills can run into the thousands, but you can enjoy peace of mind for as little as £30 a year by taking out pet insurance cover.”
